Psychology Around the Net: May 20, 2017

Happy Saturday, sweet readers!

This week’s Psychology Around the Net takes a look at how human psychology is costing us money, how walking and creativity might have developed together, how anger and depression are connected, and more.

Enjoy!

Your Psychology Is Costing You Money: Here’s How To Fight Back: Does human psychology make playing the “waiting game” look more attractive to us, and how could we benefit from choosing to wait rather than choosing instant gratification?

Why We Shouldn’t Stigmatize Mentally Ill Prisoners: Dr. Elizabeth Ford, Chief of Psychiatry for Correctional Health Services for New York City’s Health and Hospitals wonders if it’s possible for us to see beyond stigmatizing headlines–as well as our own assumptions–so that we can actually pay attention to the people our criminal justice system policies affect, and she believes the answer might be a “surprising yes.”

How Does the Brain-Body Connection Affect Creativity? Did walking and creativity develop together? According to author, music producer, and yoga/fitness instructor Derek Beres, they absolutely did. “[T]he ability to walk turned us into efficient communicators […] Creative means of communication developed.”

McDonald’s Ad Accused of Exploiting Childhood Grief to Sell Sandwiches: During a 90-second McDondald’s commercial aired in the United Kingdom, a boy is pleased to find out that he and his deceased father had something in common: their favorite McDonald’s sandwich. The commercial received a lot of immediate backlash with people claiming McDonald’s was using a child’s grief to tug at our heartstrings for its own profit, and the fast-food giant has since issued an apology.

How To Deal With Anger in Depression: Anger is often a symptom of depression, as well as a cover-up for other symptoms you experience with depression such as guilty and shame, fear, embarrassment, hurt, and vulnerability. When it comes to dealing with depression symptoms, dealing with the anger is just as important as dealing with the sadness. Understand the presence of anger and learn the warning signs, triggers, and your physical responses.

Rosemary Oil Sales Triple As Students Stock Up On ‘Memory-Boosting’ Herb Ahead Of Exams: A recent Northumbria University study that involved placing children in rosemary-scented rooms and unscented rooms showed the children in the rosemary-scented rooms outperformed those in the unscented rooms when it came to mental tasks. According to the study’s author, Mark Moss, “It could be that aromas affect electrical activity in the brain or that pharmacologically active compounds can be absorbed when adults are exposed.” He also noted that the effects varied among some participants, and some experienced no effect.
