Psychology Around the Net: September 3, 2016

Our Clients Are Happy Clients, Smile On Business Card

Here in the U.S., we’re currently in the throes of Labor Day Weekend (and I’m at a local music and arts festival, celebrating!).

Labor Day is the first Monday of September, and although it gives us a nice little three-day weekend, it’s about much more than that: Labor Day honors our country’s labor movement and “constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”

So, Happy Labor Day! I hope you’re doing something to celebrate all your hard work and, once you get a chance, check out this week’s latest in how your mood affects whether you live in the moment or the future, the new warning labels regarding opioid use with other medications, what your choice between iPhones and Androids says about your personality, and more!

Finding Happiness: Your Mood Decides Whether You Live In The Moment Or Focus On Future: “The study revealed that when a person is in a good mood, they are more likely to do housework and other unpleasant yet useful activities over the next few hours than when they are in a bad mood. When feeling bad, people tend to choose activities later that day that are more pleasurable, such as playing sports and spending time with friends, apparently in an effort to feel better.”

Why Celebrity Accounts of Depression Are Vital: While it might be news, it isn’t new. Celebrities have been opening up about their own struggles with mental health for decades, if not longer, and which works well because “stars present an opportunity to talk about depression on a larger scale” according to Katrina Gray, the National Director of Communications for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

LSD Makes Your Brain More Like a Thesaurus: According to new research, people who are under the influence of LSD don’t just experience a dramatic alter to their states of consciousness; they’re also heavily activating the semantic networks in their brains.

FDA Orders Stronger Warnings About Risk of Using Opioid Painkillers With Certain Antidepressants: Using opioid medications at the same time as benzodiazepines (a certain class of anti-anxiety medication, such as Ativan and Xanax) can cause suppressed breathing, comas, and death, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued the use of new warnings (“black box warnings”) to alert physicians and their patients to the dangers of mixing opioids with these medications, as well as alcohol, insomnia medication, antipsychotic medication, and muscle relaxers.

What Your Choice of Smartphone Says About You: Whether you’re an iPhone person or an Android person could say a lot about your personality, according to doctoral study conducted by Heather Shaw from the University of Lincoln’s School of Psychology. (Sneak Peek: “Android users are perceived to have greater levels of honesty and humility, agreeableness and openness personality traits but are seen as less extroverted than iPhone users.”)

You Asked: Why Can’t I Remember Things? We all experience a little memory lapse from time to time, but if you’re finding yourself forgetting things a lot, it could be due to high levels of stress, not enough sleep, and the increasing demands of modern day life.
