Best of Our Blogs: March 5, 2019

I attended Oahu’s Wanderlust festival over the weekend specifically to hear author Elizabeth Gilbert speak. It was a life changing few hours. In that time, I learn how to be courageous and free. Surprisingly, what was most transforming is being in a room of over two hundred people and remembering struggle is a universal thing.

Gilbert also had us write letters to and from various parts of ourselves. One of the most moving was a permission slip. In it, we were told to list all the things we had permission to do and not do anymore. Workshop attendees read things like, “I have permission to leave my loveless marriage,” or “I have permission to get a dog and not tell my landlord or my husband about it.” Gilbert’s permission including never having to write another Christmas card.

It was a liberating exercise. Want to try it? List all the things you give yourself permission to do and not do, and see how free you feel afterwards.
