Psychology Around the Net: June 17, 2017

8 Healthy Ways to Deal with Jealousy

Happy Saturday, sweet readers!

My intention for this week’s Psychology Around the Net wasn’t to get straight to the point; rather, I had a story I wanted to share. However, given the topic of several of this week’s stories (you’ll see), I’ve decided to keep it short and sweet and turn off this computer as soon as I can and head out for a white water rafting trip I’ve been both anxious and excited about all week. I’ve never been white water rafting, so wish me luck!

This week’s edition of Psychology Around the Net gets you up to speed on restaurants that are eliminating WiFi for social interaction purposes, how we can tap into more of our brains’ potential, the potential connection between sleep apnea and treatment-resistant depression, and more.

Social Interaction Is Critical for for Mental and Physical Health: Restaurants like Toronto’s HotBlack Coffee and most of New York’s Cafe Grumpy locations are experiencing a WiFi blackout — on purpose, and for good reason.

Women May Be Flocking To Yoga To Stave Off Mental Illness: A new study from Brown University showed researchers that the reason it seems like more women roll out the yoga mat than do men is because women tend to experience more mental health benefits — such as lessened depression and higher self-esteem — when they practice yoga.

You Asked: How Can I Use More of My Brain? The whole “humans only use 10% of their brains” thing is a myth, but there is an effective way you can tap into brain reserves and up the ante when it comes to sharpening insight an analysis: extended bouts of concentration by way of eliminating distractions unrelated to the task at hand.

Sleep-Disordered Breathing Linked to Persistent Teen Depression: A recent small study shows a potential connection between treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and sleep-disordered breathing in adolescents. Dr. Sanjeey Korthare, a director of pediatric sleep medicine, isn’t surprised given that sleep deprivation can lead to depression: “I would treat the sleep apnea first and see if the mood improves and then take it from there. It would be nice to have a prospective study where you treat one symptom, in this case sleep apnea, and see if depression improves.”

Inside the Rehab Saving Young Men from Their Internet Addiction: The aptly named ReSTART Life helps residents withdrawal from the technology addiction (we’re going beyond just computers here) that’s led them to drop out of college, live in their cars, get fired from jobs, lose contact with family and friends, and even become suicidal.

Science Says Relationships Fail When These Four Things Happen: Because the presence of these four things predict a doomed relationship with 93% accuracy, they’ve been dubbed “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” by Dr. John Gottman and colleagues at the University of Washington.
