Happy Saturday, Psych Central readers!

I hope my fellow Americans enjoyed last week’s Fourth of July celebrations! Unfortunately, my neck of the woods has been devastated with rain and extreme flooding, so I didn’t get to celebrate as much as I would have liked.

However, the sun is shining today, and it’s time to catch up on this week’s latest mental health news! Keep reading for information on how medical marijuana has lowered prescription drug use, see pictures one photographer uses to chronicle his quest for peace amid anxiety and depression, which habits say a lot about your personality, and more.

Not Blowing Smoke: Research Finds Medical Marijuana Lowers Prescription Drug Use: According to new research published in the July issue of Health Affairs, Medicare’s prescription drug benefit program is experiencing drastic savings (an estimated around $165.2 million in 2013 alone) due to lower prescription drug use in states that have implemented medical marijuana laws.

Mental Health Reform Bill Overwhelmingly Clears House of Representatives: On Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives cleared the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act, a mental health reform bill introduced by licensed child psychologist Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA), 422-2, and legislators are urging the Senate to quickly pass a similar bill.

An Artist Photographs His Depression to Destigmatize Mental Illness: South African photographer Tsoku Maela uses Abstract Peaces, a series of striking photographs that chronicles his “personal quest to find peace in spite of his lifelong experience with depression and anxiety” and aims to destigmatize mental illness in black communities around the globe.

Internet Savvy Teens Are Worse at Romantic Relationships in Real Life: A new study (published in the Journal of Research on Adolescence) found from a sample of 487 teens from a public school that “those who spent more time communicating with their boyfriends or girlfriends through texting or social media were less adept at managing conflicts or sharing problems and standing up for themselves in real life a year [after the study].”

CollegeHumor’s New Video ‘What Social Anxiety Feels Like’ Perfectly Describes Life With Anxiety: I was skeptical of the article title, but, actually, I think the CollegeHumor video does perfeclty (or at least close-to-perfectly) shows what it’s like to live with anxiety.

11 Tiny Habits That Reveal a Lot About Your Personality, According to Science: Even the smallest, most seemingly insignificant behaviors or habits — such as how you organize your email inbox and the way you hang your toilet papers (sidenote: people have probably come to fisticuffs over this debate) — could provide an interesting look at your personality, emotions, and how you approach life.
